I had the luck recently to have erotic author K D Grace write a guest post for me. Her book Body Temperature and Rising, which I recently had the opportunity to read, is wonderful and full of supernatural pleasures. I hope you enjoy her article below! ~dS

Sex in Magic and Ritual

by K D Grace

Because Body Temperature and Rising is an erotic paranormal novel involving witches, ghost and demons, the magic was a key ingredient in the story. In order to battle a demon and give flesh to ghosts, that magic would have to be more than a little airy fairy fluttering of hands and hocus pocus. I’ve always thought sex is the most powerful magic we humans possess. With that in mind, the Elemental Coven’s rare form of sex magic was born.

Having spent several years in a Wiccan coven myself, I knew a little about the rituals and ceremonies that take place in a magic circle. Of course there was no real sex magic of the type I’ve created for the Lakeland Heatwave novels, but sex was still a part of every circle, in every ritual, in every ceremony. The key tools of power present in every circle are the athame, which is a ceremonial knife representing the erect penis, and the chalice, which represents the womb. Even if sex is only represented symbolically, it’s the essential element in earth-based spirituality, which celebrates and honours the fertility of the earth and the turning of the seasons.

What I did in Body Temperature and Rising and all of the Lakeland Heatwave novels was to bring the sex to the forefront, to make it more than symbolic and use it as the ritual to bring about the intended magic needed for the scene. I wanted the sex itself to be more than a group of people fucking beneath the full moon every twenty-eight days. I wanted it to manifest physical results, so I made the sex magic the witches of the Elemental Coven practice serve as an enfleshment spell.

The saddest part of all ghost stories for me has always been that ghosts have no flesh with which to experience the pleasures of the living. That has always made writing a ghost story that involved sex a real problem. For my novel to work, my ghosts had to have physical bodies, even if those bodies were magically created. For this the enfleshment spell was essential.

I wanted to use sex as a creative force for something other than procreation, and I wanted it to create the physical bond that held the Elemental Coven together. Each of the three novels is a love story featuring one of the coven members and a magically gifted outsider. Each newcomer’s gift is connected to one of the cardinal directions of the circle of power. The common thread in all of the novels is the on-going battle with a demon, who practices his own form of sex magic, and who is intent on destroying the coven. Ultimately the constant use of sex magic has created very strong bonds within the coven making the coven itself a group marriage, of sorts, with the dynamic changing at the addition of each new member.

BTR is fast paced, tense and at times terrifying. And I think tying sex and magic together to form truly wicked, and sometimes wonderfully nasty spells gives the whole novel a uniquely edgy, darkly arousing atmosphere.

American transplant to the Lake District, MARIE WARREN, didn’t know she could unleash demons and enflesh ghosts until a voyeuristic encounter on the fells ends in sex with the charming ghost, ANDERSON, and night visits from a demon. To help her cope with her embarrassing and dangerous new abilities, Anderson brings her to the ELEMENTALS, a coven of witches who practice rare sex magic that temporarily allows needy ghosts access to the pleasures of the flesh.

DEACON, the demon Marie has unleashed, holds an ancient grudge against TARA STONE, coven high priestess, and will stop at nothing to destroy all she holds dear. Marie and her landlord, the reluctant young farmer, TIM MERIWETHER, are at the top of his list. Marie and Tim must learn to wield coven magic and the numinous power of their lust to stop Deacon’s bloody rampage before the coven is torn apart and more innocent people die.

K D Grace was born with a writing obsession. It got worse once she actually learned HOW to write. There’s no treatment for it. It’s progressive and chronic and quite often interferes with normal, everyday functioning. She might actually be concerned if it wasn’t so damned much fun most of the time.

K D’s critically acclaimed erotic romance novels, The Initiation of Ms Holly, The Pet Shop and Lakeland Heatwave Book 1: Body Temperature and Rising are published by Xcite Books and are available from all good paperback and eBook retailers.

Her erotica has been published with Xcite Books, Mammoth, Cleis Press, Harper Collins Mischief Books, Black Lace, Erotic Review, Ravenous Romance, Sweetmeats Press and Scarlet Magazine.
